Put simply, we LOVE this section. If you are a keen reader looking for the next exciting book to try, a confused Godparent struggling to find a Christening present, or a parent in need of inspiration to encourage your child to read, please just ask our knowledgeable booksellers for help. Between us, there are many years of reading experience, and we enjoy nothing more than chatting through ideas and finding the right book for the right child.
It’s never too early to get little ones into books, even if they are just munching them! Top Tip – babies enjoy admiring themselves and so love mirrored board books.
We have a huge range of picture books – most of which are aimed at children, but some are works of art in themselves, we believe picture books are for grown ups too.
Possibly the trickiest stage – when young readers move onto chapter books – it’s definitely worth asking our advice on what works best.
Every parent treasures the book that really got their child reading – for some it’s the world of Harry Potter, for others, the wonders of Michelle Paver’s Wolf Brother series.
We have a big selection of activity books, from the ever-popular sticker and colouring-in books to junior cookbooks, there’s no excuse for boredom!
This section is positioned just outside the children’s section to avoid any suggestion that teens are still children (!), please do ask. if you are not sure about appropriate content.
Audio books are brilliant, not least because they ensure peace and tranquility on long family car journeys, and are great for reluctant readers. At Mainstreet we have transformed two large storage cupboards in the bookshop into audio book ‘listening dens’ for children aka, The Book Burrows.Read more
Each Burrows has been illustrated by Phillippa, one is designed as Fantastic Mr Fox’s lair, and the other is Mrs Rabbit’s kitchen (under Mr MacGregor’s garden of course). Don’t miss a magical surprise under the carpet in Mrs Rabbit’s kitchen…Close
We are always happy to work with local schools, whether to advise on restocking the library, host a class visit to the bookshop, organize end of year prizes or collaborate on window displays.
In 2015, we launched the Mainstreet Van, a beautiful Citroen H van which was originally a fire-engine/ambulance, and is now a mobile pop-up bookshop. Our ambition is to ensure that every child in the Borders meets an author through Maintreet during their school life.Read more
Once a term, the van visits local schools to host a series of author events. Past authors have included Michael Morpurgo, MG Leonard, Adam Murphy and Lari Don.
Visits are planned with our Teachers Book Group, in association with Scottish Borders Council. If you are a teacher and would be interesting in hearing more, please contact please get in touch with us at Mainstreet or Kevin.Greenfield@scotborders.gov.uk.Close
