Somerset Day 2018
On a sunny day in the middle of May with Bill de la Hey…
Somerset boy Bill spent this year’s official ‘Somerset Day’ celebrating his home county with a CHESSE + CIDER BARROW in the back of our vintage Citroen H Van.
Having grown up in Somerset, Bill has long championed West Country produce in the Mainstreet DELI, regulars will no doubt be familiar with our favourite Montgomery Cheddar and Burrow Hill Cider. In celebration of Somerset Day we added some other favourites to the stall in the form of Cider from Harry’s and Heck’s, alongside Keens and Westcombe Cheddar and Tymsboro and Sleightlett goats cheese form Neal’s Yard Dairy.
Glorious sunshine is the perfect partner for a crisp farmhouse cider and a bright a characterful cheddar. Neal’s Yard Dairy select and mature farmhouses cheese from across the UK and Ireland, and are responsible for ensuring the very best tasting cheese arrives at the doors of Mainstreet each week. We work closely with the team in London to make sure we are choosing cheese with seasonality and flavour profile in mind.
Traditional Somerset cider is a far reach from its mass produced, sugary counterpart. Local variety apples are harvested and pressed to produce naturally sweet, medium and dry cider, fermented in wooden barrels to impart flavour. What could be better than serving this amber liquid in a stoneware tankard from John Leach’s Muchelney Pottery?
