Doctor-turned-comedian, Adam Kay talked about his memoir ‘This is Going To hurt’

Adam Kay joined us at Mainstreet to discuss the funniest book ever written about the NHS – This is Going to Hurt. Few memoirs have inspired so many snorts of laughter, spiked with an aftertaste of pathos. It was a wonderful chance to hear Adam’s first-hand account of life as a junior doctor in all its joy, pain, sacrifice, hilarity, horror and maddening bureaucracy.

We learnt learn more than you ever wanted to about some horrific injuries (look away from page 19 if you’re squeamish) and feel even more impassioned about the everyday heroism of NHS staff.

‘Laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreakingly sad. I’d prescribe this book to anyone and everyone – it’s wonderful’ Jonathan Ross

‘Painfully funny. The pain and the funniness somehow add up to something entirely good, entirely noble and entirely loveable’ Stephen Fry
