AUTHOR EVENT: KAREN CAMPBELL
At Mainstreet, we have long been fans of Karen Campbell’s work, so we are delighted she will be joining us on Thurs 1st August to talk about her new novel, The Sound of the Hours.
Her first two books achieved the dream combination of beautiful writing and gripping storylines. This time, she’s given us a rich, historical setting too…
It is September 1943 and at the heart of a fiesta in the hilltop Tuscan town of Barga, seventeen-year-old Scottish-Italian Vita is dancing. Her future seems simple: either she will marry her cousin Joe, or she will become a teacher. Yet when the German and Italian fascist occupation of Barga is challenged by the arrival of the 370th Infantry from the US Army, loyalties are tested and families torn apart.
The Sound of the Hours is at once an intimate and tender portrait of first love, and a sweeping evocation of an extraordinary, devastating moment in history.
Karen is as beguiling as her writing, don’t miss the chance to hear her talking about her work.
‘I am in awe of Karen Campbell’s writing. Rise soars and sears in equal measure – it is brilliant, unputdownable storytelling’ – Mel Giedroyc, for Rise
‘A story of tragedy told with such eloquence and elegance as to renew our faith in the resilience of the human spirit’ – Kerry Young, for This Is Where I Am
