SHELLY KLEIN – LIVE AUTHOR EVENT
We are delighted to announce that Shelley Klein, will be with us at Mainstreet on Wed 20th October to talk about her family memoir, The See-Through House.
Shelley grew up in the Borders in a house designed on a modernist open-plan grid; with colourful glass panels set against a forest of trees. Living in High Sunderland (or, as Shelley called it, the see-through house) was like living in a work of art.
‘My father was the house. The house was my father’
Shelley’s father, Bernat Klein, was a Yugoslavian émigré and ground-breaking textile designer. Her memoir is suffused with art, fashion, architecture, humour and ultimately love. Threaded through the book is her father’s own story: an Orthodox Jewish childhood in Yugoslavia; his arrival in post-war Britain and his imagining of a house filled with light and colour as interpreted by the architect Peter Womersley. The See-Through House is about the places that make us, and what happens when we have to leave them.
“‘A luminous book, full of light and colour, and a remarkable reflection on childhood and untold stories.’”
– Edmund De Waal
“A sad, funny, utterly fascinating book about families, home and how to say ”
– Mark Haddon
