We think it’s so important to educate ourselves about the world we live in and the impact of our consumption, whether that means taking a closer look at the coffee supply chain or doing our bit to promote greater diversity in publishing. We love our communities and know many of you are passionate about the same issues, so we’ve created the STEAMPUNK X MAINSTREET Book Club.
Your purchase will include
– 250g Steampunk’s latest release coffee, Juanambú Buesaco Nariño, from south western Colombia
– a Mainstreet selected book, Fish Soup by award-winning Colombian author Margarita García Robayo (translated by Charlotte Coombe)
– a ticket to a virtual book club event, which will provide the opportunity to learn a little more about the coffee, discuss the book and hear from Margarita herself.
We hope that this will be the first of many paired coffee and book collaborations…
Orders will be taken until midnight, Wednesday 21 October and will be sent out on Monday 26 October. Our virtual event will be held at 6:30pm on Thursday 19 November.
More about Fish Soup
Fish Soup is a unique collection with plenty of Colombian flair, comprising two novellas plus the book of short stories Worse Things (winner of the prestigious Casa de las Américas Prize).
Throughout the collection, García Robayo’s signature style blends cynicism and beauty with an undercurrent of dark humour. The prose is at once blunt and poetic as she delves into the lives of her characters, who simultaneously evoke sympathy and revulsion, challenging the reader’s loyalties as they immerse themselves in the unparalleled universe that is Fish Soup.
Fish Soup is published by Charco Press, an amazing Edinburgh-based independent publisher. Charco Press focuses on finding outstanding contemporary Latin American literature and bringing it to new readers in the English-speaking world. They aim to act as a cultural and linguistic bridge for you to be able to access a brand new world of fiction that has, until now, been missing from your reading list.
More about the coffee
This lot was grown by 60 smallholder farmers on plots located high above the Juanambú Canyon in Buesaco, a town in south western Colombia. The high altitude, low relative humidity, warm days and cool nights make it perfect for the cultivation and processing of exceptional specialty coffee. The farmers who grew this coffee are part of an association called Alianza Café, a specialty coffee off-shoot of a larger organization that was formed by producers in the region to support the development of coffee and provide access to higher value markets. The exporter are also a coffee roastery, with four cafes in Medellín. All the coffee from the association that receives high quality scores is purchased at a premium in accordance to the quality of the lot and the final price at which it is sold, a structure which is fairer for producers.
If you require the coffee ground, please select the appropriate brew method from the drop down menu. Choice of whole bean, espresso, Moka Pot, filter, Aeropress or cafetiere.
