The Owners - Roz & Bill
Husband and wife team, Rosamund and Bill De Le Hey opened Mainstreet Trading Company in 2008. Perfectly timed with a global banking crisis, the rise of ebooks and online selling. Most people thought they were crazy.
Happily it turns out people still want real shops. Now well into its second decade of trading, Mainstreet has won numerous awards including Britain’s Best Small Shop, Independent Bookshop of the Year and Deli of the Year.
Rosamund has spent her life in books, from reading under the covers by torch, to launching and promoting Harry Potter while children’s marketing director at Bloomsbury. She moved home to Scotland in 2003, becoming partial to a bacon roll on the red eye train commuting to London. In 2008, she and husband, Bill, opened The Mainstreet Trading Company. Rosamund served as President of the Booksellers Association between 2016 and 2018.
Bill worked as a freelance photographer in London from 1992 to 2004, working for publications ranging from The Telegraph to Car Magazine.
On moving to Scotland, he decided to follow his passion for good food, retraining as a chef at The Edinburgh School of Food and Wine. It proved timely to the launch of Mainstreet, where Bill heads up all things food and drink, and drove the launch of Mainstreet Deli in 2012. Bill is now best described as a cheesemonger/wine merchant who is nuts about natural wines.
Mary – Accountant
A qualified accountant and genius bookkeeper, Mary is the hand that steadies the ship at Mainstreet. Master of the spreadsheet, she is also a very keen (and competitive) golfer, lover of crime fiction and brilliant baker. Making everyone at Mainstreet a delicious and individualised cake for their birthday, she may be one of the kindest and most thoughtful people you come across.
The Books Team
Vivian – Bookshop Assistant Manager
Vivian sums up Mainstreet as a well-read foodie, who loves beautiful things. Before joining Mainstreet shortly after it opened in 2008, Vivian was a commis chef and artist. Both skills have proved vital to the success of Mainstreet as anyone who has eaten her German Tart or witnessed her stunning window art will attest. Her love and knowledge of books is astonishing and this is shown each month when she makes the Year of Book Subscription selections and repeatedly gets them spot on.
Sarah – Online Assistant Manager/ Bookseller
Sarah joined Mainstreet in 2021 just as we reopened in April that year. Like many of the team, she is a brilliant multi-tasker, one moment you’ll find her posting gorgeous images on social media, the next selling her favourite book, clearing a café table as she goes.
Fran – Bookseller
Fran was part of the original team who set up the hugely successful indie, Portobello Books in Edinburgh. Loving books, but keen to stop commuting from the Borders, she joined the Mainstreet books team in April 2021. She brings with her a warm enthusiasm for her subject, plus huge artistic talents – you may have seen some of her beautiful window painting. Fran is also now buying cards for our books section, introducing lots of lovely new suppliers.
Jack – Bookseller
Jack has been at Mainstreet, on and off, since leaving school, originally in the café team, where World Book Day is usually enough to get him dressed up as Spiderman. As well as being our in-house graphic novel/sci-fi specialist, Jack is a very talented artist destined for great things – publishers, watch this space!
The Deli & Home Team
Kim – Deli Assistant Manager
Kim is a long-standing Borders foodie, having begun her journey at The Cross Keys in Ancrum (along with best friend, Nina). She joined Mainstreet to lead the deli team in April 2021, sharing her love of cheese and gin with our customers ever since. When not finding the best new suppliers to stock our shelves in the Deli, Kim can be found going over a tricky invoice with Mary or providing help to others when they might need a extra set of hands to get through a busy spell. After a long day, she enjoys going home to see her dog Moss and relaxing with a new gin to try from our Deli.
Michelle – Home Assistant Manager
Michelle joined Mainstreet shortly after the deli launched in 2012. Like many of the team, she is rather overqualified for the job, being a genetic scientist who previously worked at the Roslyn Institute (yes, that means Dolly the sheep..). She took on managing Mainstreet Home department in 2020 and likes nothing more than finding her next favourite supplier when on a buying trip.
Emma – Deli/Home Assistant
Emma moved back to the Borders from France with her family in 2018, and joined us at Mainstreet to work part time in Deli & Home. When not cutting cheese and unpacking deliveries, she spends her time in her studio making beautiful art. Emma always wears the most wonderful clothes and her sense of style is regularly being admired by fellow staff members.
Susanna – Home/Deli Assistant
Susannah has worked in most departments at Mainstreet, from books to café, and is now part of the core Deli & Home team, bringing order to the many deliveries, and switching from recommending cheese one moment, to discussing the best feather duster the next moment.
Cafe & Kitchen Team
Nina – Cafe/Kitchen Assistant Manager
Nina first worked at Mainstreet in her pre-university days. Having studied events management, she worked in Glasgow for a number of years gaining valuable experience in the events and hospitality sector. Luckily for Mainstreet she decided to return to the Borders last year, and she’s been leading our café and kitchen team with great energy and commitment since then. She is always quick to put some good music on the speakers and make sure everyone in all departments is doing okay, even on her busiest days.
Sue – Baker
Sue is perhaps best known for her delicious merguez sausage rolls – a smash hit sell-out in our lockdown takeaway phase. Her gluten-free treats are always to die for and she always likes to experiment with new recipes she has discovered on her days off. She is a trained patisserie chef who loves anything from the clothes shop Fat Face – if you ever fancy anything she is wearing, head there first!
Caron – Cook
Caron brings the sunshine. You may have seen Caron’s smiling face through our kitchen windows where she is found cooking, baking and singing. She often gets the other staff dancing as they pass through, always cheering them up. She loves all things fresh and colourful and often raids our cookbook selection for inspiration. Caron is also a preacher in our local parish, Mainstreet sometimes even gets a mention in her sermons!
Alice – Cook
Alice is a qualified engineer, with a great love for cooking, baking and all things musical. This multi-talented lady also likes to sew in her spare time and you will often see her wearing the clothes that she makes for herself. As if she did not already do enough with her time, she now combines her work at Mainstreet with studying for a MSc in Mechanical Engineering.
Katie – Cafe Assistant
Katie is always smiling behind the café counter or in the kitchen as she makes the fresh scones every day, that are a firm favourite with our customers. While in the kitchen she likes to jam out to her favourite music, usually Taylor Swift (a firm favourite with Alice as well), and will make sure the chat is always flowing wherever she is in the building. She’s spending the year with us in advance of starting university to study Speech and Language Therapy in the autumn and, when the time comes, we will be sad to see her go.
Sam – Cafe Assistant
Sam joined Mainstreet in November 2020. Living in the village, she is the team member with the shortest commute and loves to help the community out when she can. She has two wonderful children who are regulars at Mainstreet and she often treats them to a slice of Jackie’s famous Chocolate Guinness cake or a hot chocolate when they come and say hi to her behind the counter.
Rachel – Cafe Assistant
When she is not serving coffee and cake, Rachel is baking for family and friends, working on her Etsy shop or enjoying a good movie night. She joined Mainstreet while studying at college and has come out of her shell since becoming part of the team. In any spare second she gets while on the floor, Rachel practices the art of making the perfect hot chocolate and it is her go to drink to recharge after a rush of customers have flowed through the door.
Grace – Cafe/Book Assistant
Grace joined our cafe team later on in 2021 while still completing her final year of high school. She has now just graduated from 6th year and has become a multi-tasker here at Mainstreet, hopping into the bookshop a couple days a week to share her love of books with our customers as well as still making some great coffees. Grace will be with us all summer before she heads to St Andrews University to start her degree in German.
