James Naughtie joined us in March 2023 to talk about his latest book ‘The Spy Across the Water’

We were delighted to announce that bestselling novelist and legendary broadcaster, James Naughtie would be joining us on Wed 22nd March to talk about his new novel, The Spy Across the Water.

We live with our history, but it can kill us.

Faces from the past appear from nowhere at a family funeral, and Will Flemyng, spy-turned-ambassador, is drawn into twin mysteries that threaten everything he holds dear. From Washington, he’s pitched back into the Troubles in Northern Ireland and an explosive secret hidden deep in the  dangerous but fulfilling friendship he has known. And while he confronts shadowy adversaries in American streets, and looks for solace at home in the Scottish Highlands, he discovers that his government’s most precious Cold War agent is in mortal danger and needs his help to survive.

Praise for James Naughtie’s previous novel:

‘A hugely satisfying thriller that grips from the first page to the last’ –Kate Mosse

‘Complex and psychologically detailed… an evocative and eloquent novel’ –Charles Cumming

‘A slow-burning, cerebral and gripping thriller which fuses the entwined professions of politics and espionage’ –The Herald

‘A hugely gripping and atmospheric read’ –Alexander McCall Smith

‘Naughtie writes with a cool authority reminiscent of that now neglected master of the novel of espionage, William Haggard’ –The Scotsman
