Sue Ure Maison – Home Highlights

Blog · Posted April 8, 2024

Our Current Home Highlight is a beautiful ceramics company based in France.

The sun has finally started to appear and just in time to help us show off our brand-new Home Highlight. Sue Ure Maison was discovered by Michelle and Rosamund at Top Drawer. Both instantly adored the tableware on display, as well as Sue herself. We have chosen a selection of items from Sue’s Ambit range, as well as a handful of tapas bowls from her ColourPop Studio Collection. Rooted in her passion for pottery and the values of artisan craftsmanship, all of the Sue Ure Maison products align with what we look for at Mainstreet.

 ABOUT SUE URE CERAMICS

Sue first took up pottery in her teens and her original pleasure and fascination of transforming clay into elegant and functional objects is still what drives her work today.

Hailing from London, Sue decided to move to a sunnier south-west France 30 years ago. She ascribes some of her inspiration for the simplicity and vibrant 1960’s colour choices of her work to both of these landscapes, deeming her work as “mediterranean colours meets mid-century aesthetic”.

While every item is designed – or made – by Sue, she is very committed to responsible sourcing and paying a fair price to partners who help manufacture her designs. As a designer/maker she knows the value of artisan craftsmanship and the labour of love that it is. She is a supporter of the Just a Card campaign, which promotes artists, makers, independent shops and creative businesses like her own company and our shop here in St Boswells.

Sue has mastered her craft over the last forty-odd years and has been running Sue Ure Maison for ten years. Over on her instagram you can see her incredible skill and just some of what goes into making these ceramics before they appear on shelves like our own  – @sueure.

AMBIT RANGE

We think that the pieces from this range are a gorgeous addition to any kitchen.

The Ambit mugs, which despite having a fine rim and the feel of fragility, are durable and an ideal choice for your morning coffee or tea. The hand drawn line on each of the pieces makes a divide between a fully glazed upper half and the matte texture of an unglazed bottom half.

As people who love their coffee we have discovered that the wider shape and the lower height of the mugs is perfect for fitting under most home coffee machines.

The selection that we have in the shop includes bowls, mugs, small jugs and beakers. The beakers, despite being the smallest item we have ordered, are the most versatile. Designed to be the perfect cup for a double espresso shot, they can also be used to hold a luxury dessert, a good wine or even to house a little indoor plant.

We agree with Sue when she describes this range as being able to “enhance the enjoyment of the most ordinary of daily activities.”

COLOURPOP STUDIO TAPAS BOWLS

The Ambit range is designed by Sue but made by her trusted manufacturer in Sri Lanka. However, these tapas bowls are thrown by Sue herself and come directly from her potter’s wheel in her French studio.

The joyful colour combinations will bring the feeling of summer into your home. Aside from the bold colours, these bowls share some of the same attributes as the Ambit range so can be used as statement pieces when mixing the two ranges together. Mirroring the clean lines and the combination of glazed and unglazed textures, the ColourPop Studio pieces complement the Ambit pieces beautifully.

At Mainstreet we appreciate the passion, creativity and effort that goes into creating Sue’s craft. Artisan craftsmanship is incredibly important and makers like Sue excel in skill refinement, design and leaving their mark on the discipline through unique handcrafted pieces.

Artisan crafts play a crucial role in preserving tradition while also embracing modern innovation and promoting sustainable/ethical practices. All of this is important to remember when you pick Sue’s work up from our shelves. These pieces have all been carefully created and perfected before arriving in your hands.
